Going Beyond Skin Deep
Updated: Nov 16, 2018
Your skin is armor. Think about all of the things outside of your body - viruses, bacteria, allergens, toxins - that your skin effectively protects you from, all while maintaining itself as a semi-permeable barrier and the largest organ in the human body. It's pretty incredible.
Because your skin is a such a good barrier, though, it can also prevent absorption of things that you want, like the cannabinoids and herbal medicines found in Newell's Botanical's topical cannabis products. Most oils, often called carrier oils, will absorb to some extent into the skin and have a localized effect, but to really get deep through the layers, into tissues, and inside cells you have to mimic the phospholipids naturally produced by the human body. Animal fats, like Emu Oil, accomplish this.
Emu oil is primarily composed of omega-9 fatty acids, which are also made by our bodies. Because its so similar to our own lipids, omega-9 has excellent affinity to our cells, and can penetrate deeply into tissues, quickly. That's why our very first product was called Deep Skin Penetrating Topical Oil! That's just what it does.
Another trick for getting better absorption is with menthol, which can be synthetic or naturally derived from mint leaves. Menthol gets it's name from "mentha", the scientific name for the mint genus. Topicals with menthol can have a very overpowering smell, like IcyHot or BenGay, which some people don't like, especially if they have to be around a lot of people or at a fancy event. Emu oil cannabis topicals like Deep Skin can be completely neutral smelling, meaning you can use them anytime, anywhere!
