4 Self-Care Tips for Winter

Updated: Nov 22, 2018

Winter is coming, and the time to armor yourself against the onslaught of cold and flu bugs, windburn, dry skin, and chapped lips is now, not later. Here are a few things you can do to prepare yourself so you can walk into spring looking like spent the whole winter at the spa.

1. Get Outside Every Morning

This is something to live by year-round, not just in the winter, but it is especially important during cold and flu season! Getting morning sunlight on your skin and in your eyes (don't wear sunglasses for this) is critical to producing vitamin D and synthesizing a host of hormones that your body needs to stay healthy, mentally and physically.

2. Diffuse Essential Oils

In addition to helping your home smell sweet and fresh instead of dank and dusky during the winter, essential oils can also help keep you healthy! Eucalyptus and Tea Tree essential oils have been clinically shown to kill the flu virus, while Lemongrass and Cinnamon Bark essential oils are powerful antibacterials. Essential oils like Lavender and Bergamot have known mood improving properties and can help push back the clouds of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

3. Moisturize After Showers

We all love the clean feeling the comes after soaping up in the shower, but along with dirt and germs soap - even natural soap - strips away a lot of the healthy skin oils and microbes that help keep our skin supple and healthy. After a shower, while your skin is damp, is the perfect time to moisturize with an oil or lotion. The heat and moisture in your skin helps spread the oils around so that you don't over-apply and end up with too greasy. Do this every time you shower to help keep your skin healthy through the cold and dry months.

4. Use an Organic Lip Balm

Your lips are super vulnerable during the winter months especially, and there's nothing worse than not being able to smile or eat without splitting bits of your lips open. Ouch! You want to use a lip balm that has natural, soothing, organic ingredients and not one with petroleum byproducts and synthetic fragrances. We recommend Savior Lips by Newell's Botanicals, an organic hempseed and beeswax balm with just soothing peppermint and cinnamon leaf oils, and vitamin e. Use it anywhere you have chapped, broken, dry, and peeling skin.
